Don’t fear cybercrime law, says DoJ

There is nothing to fear with Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, especially with the Department of Justice’s power to block and restrict access to a website, Justice Undersecretary Geronimo Sy, head of the DoJ Cybercrime Office, says. Video by INQUIRER.net’s Ryan Leagogo

MANILA, Philippines—There is nothing to fear with Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, especially with the Department of Justice’s power to block and restrict access to a website, Justice Undersecretary Geronimo Sy, head of the DoJ Cybercrime Office said Tuesday.

He said there is nothing to fear about the DoJ’s power to block websites, which he said some sectors erroneously call it “takedown provisions.”

“Taking down data is different from restricting or blocking,” Sy said during his lecture at the Cybercrime Forum attended by various internet usergroups, bloggers, netizens.

Examples that can be blocked are cybersex dens, terrorism, video on how to make bombs and the likes, Sy pointed out.

Sy added that when a website has been blocked, there is also a process of appeal.

“There is also a process of appeal so we can check our own authority,” Sy said.

“We have good intentions in a lot of things that we do…we need you to watch us,” Sy said.

you have good intentions on what you do…wow…i have a good intentions also..i want peace and security in my place, isn’t this a good intention?. So with my good intentions, can I do any actions even it is against the rights of others?…a stupid idea isn’t it?

  • boldyak

we are not afraid of any laws, we follow laws so there is no need to be afraid of, the problem is:…this law violates our rights according to the constitution, we are not violators of laws, this law violates our rights…DOJ should act only as prosecutors and not as judges, actions against violators should have a court order…DOJ should know their function according to the constitutions if you don’t know it, get out from there…

these politicians or lawmakers as they call themselves pass laws to silenced the people who elected them!!! they also passed laws to protect themselves from corruption like the foreign  currency act to hide their loots or nakaw in the banks. ginagawang tanga ang mga pilipino. why don’t you lawmakers pass a law against Vote Buying which is a form of Cheating and the root cause of Corruption…because yung mga ninakaw ninyo sa taong bayan ay ginagamit ninyo sa pagbili ng boto…kailan kaya kayo matutoto sa inyong sinumpaan na silbihan ang taong bayan? binoto na kayo, lolokohin pa ninyo. pag napuna naman kayo ng taongbayan, sasampahan ninyo ng libel…ang kakapal ng mukha ninyo!!!
