News that popular tour guide Carlos Celdran had been convicted by a court of offending religious feelings drew mixed reactions on the microblogging site Twitter.

As of 4:20 p.m. Monday, “Carlos Celdran” and the hashtag #FreeCarlosCeldran were already among the trending topics in the Philippines.

Celdran himself tweeted an announcement on his Twitter account @carlosceldran: “Guilty,” it read.

Some Twitter users quickly responded with messages of support.

“Wow, expressing opinions about religion can put you to jail now, huh? Carlos Celdran is a brave man. You have my support, sir,” said user @OD3TTEaGOGO.

Former Akbayan Rep. Risa Hontiveros (@risahontiveros) also expressed her support for Celdran: “The ruling of the Manila RTC vs @carlosceldran offends civil liberties feelings. We are w/ you, Carlos.”

Comedian Gabe Mercado (@gabemercado) tweeted: “Shocked and sick at the verdict versus @carlosceldran. :(”

User @idagurl said: “I don’t always agree with how he goes about things, but jailing Carlos Celdran for ‘offending religious feelings’ just seems so wrong.”

‘Where is justice?’

User @Pimplepopper tweeted “congratulations”: “It’s getting harder and harder to offend religious feelings as mankind progresses. Kudos to Carlos Celdran for going to jail for doing so.”

Another user asked about sending support: “Thank you for offending them on our behalf. Where do I donate for your legal defense fund? #freecarlosceldran,” user @bvergara said.

Said user @rajbayy: “Those who speak their minds are jailed. Those who steal millions & kill thousands are free. #WhereIsJustice.”

Others, however, hoped the court’s decision would teach Celdran a lesson.

Tweeted user @akoposiJOJO: “The court had spoken, rendered verdict over the case. Learn your lesson Mr. Carlos Celdran.”

“I like Carlos Celdran’s courageous act to fight 4 what he believes s right, but if we tolerate doing it inside d church, isn’t right at all,” tweeted @esmeralda_jake.

For user @MatthewAbuyo, while Celdran should be held liable for his action, the punishment was too harsh. “Carlos Celdran’s going to jail? He did disrupt a service in a church, he should be liable; however, imprisonment is too much.”

User James Nicolay (@sirnicolay) was more concerned about the effect of the issue on the Church: “The local Church leaders are not doing themselves any favor with their decision to sue Carlos Celdran. The flock is slipping away gradually,” he said. Compiled by Inquirer Research

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/276L22SZM5ZUQGV24IL4ZEF6UA Edward

dre, show ur evidence that i may help u pra maparusan ang may sala? kulto ka nga at bitter and hater of the Catholic Church…..kelan pa ang isang obispo o pare makakuha ng ari arian at ipalagay sa kanyang personal account? masama ang mag imbento laban sa kapwa…why not name names…

anyway, libre nga pala rine mag bato at mag akusa ng mga kung anu ano laban sa Inang Simbahan kesa nmn gumastos pa ng multi million pesos at nag maintain ng mga tv stations pra siraan ang Inang Simbahan as an institution for more than 2, 000 years? have u heard and read pasugo, watchtower, etc?

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/HGC2U2QUAREAK42HNUTSNQGBVI SolitaJ

In fact, sa bayan namin, there was this old priest na anlaki ang landholdings, some are gifts and some are in lieu of mass offerings. When the said priests died, his 7 siblings were named as heirs. You just can imagine how big his landholdings are! And those are just his own properties, not the ancestral inheritance. It is common that Diocesan priests, especially in provincial parishes, have their own cars, a stable of helpers, mga altar boys pinapaaral. They have money! Before, parish priests have full control of the Church funds. Now, there is already the imposition of monthly stipend, a fixed sum provided by each Diocese out of the Church collections. And all church proceeds are managed by a bursar or treasurer where these are being accounted for. But the personal gifts go straight to the priests. So hwag kang magsabing poor na poor ang priests. They have vow of poverty, yes. But they are not really poor!

    • generalproblem

celdran’s lawyer should have INVOKED religious belief…what he has done inside the church is a RELIGIOUS BELIEF…under the 1987 constitution art 3 Section 5. NO LAW shall be made respecting an establishment of religion, or PROHIBITING the FREE EXERCISE thereof. The FREE EXERCISE and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, WITHOUT DISCRIMINATION or preference, shall FOREVER BE ALLOWED …

religious belief is personal & subjective …the best person who can ATTEST to that is celdran himself…not any OTHER person…lol

celdran is just exposing the misdeeds of some men of god to GOD himself…NAGSUSUMBONG lang cya sa GOD….religious exercise yan..there is NO BETTER place na pagsumbongan nya kundi sa HOUSE of GOD….mahirap na kung sa ibang house ..parang sa lower house ..e sigurado hindi po sya pakikinggan..
NO LAW of MEN or even law of GOD has been VIOLATED…in fact GOD will reward him for being truthful & faithful.. by bringing up ..what he thinks is CONTRARY to his FAITH…

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/6PTRHDM3YZLBG7DFUIGWFJLCWE Renlols

Off topic, but I think you shouldn’t go posting your opinion under the name of someone else. That’s disrespect to the Albert Einstein. Even if you misspell it, it’s obvious. But disregard this message if your name is indeed so.

    • ed_nique

from what i read, he was protesting the church’s stand on the RH bill. is that his religious belief?

      • Albert Einstien

his belief that church is for god only not to meddle in political affairs…or secular matters…. activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis..church should ONLY be  bound by the vows of  monastic order.

    • Rightthingtodo

Ginoong Albert, Art. 133 did not establish any religion, no preference whatsoever. If one will commit act that is notoriously offensive to the feelings of any faithful, be it INC, Muslim, JIL, Iglesia ni Kulafu or any sect, it is punishable. What implied repeal are you referring to? I suggest a revisiting on the principles of statutory construction. If I was there when he showed his disgraceful conduct, I would have gladly arrested him, hoping for his resistance that I can rightfully hit him in defense of myself, para tumigil siya sa kabastusan niya. I do agree with Celdran and those catholic haters that there are abusive priests and bishops and I may add, pastors, imam or any preacher because human nature is frail.  BUT TO DISTURB THE ONGOING CELEBRATION IN A CLASSLESS AND DISRESPECTFUL MANNER IS NEVER JUSTIFIED, unless one shares the character of Celdran, na bastos at walang respeto sa pananaw ng iba.

  • nieron

CELDRAN can be compared figuratively as a WANGWANG in the Philippines!
He is too LOUD and too PROUD to be adored with his bravery in protesting against the church.

There is no qualms about somebody expressing his EMOTIONS or EXPRESSIONS as a protest to the government or  the church, as long as he is in a proper venue and “NOT STEPPING ON OTHERS TOES!

MR. CELDRAN in anyway should face the consequences of his UNETHICAL ACT.

  • Maximumaries

If you want your freedom to be respected then do it to others too!!!Afterall, for me lahat ng religion ay tama or else, if isa lang ang tama then isa na lang dapat ang pinaniniwalaan natin.ok?Ang pinaniniwalaan natin ay syang magliligtas sa atin kahit INC, ang dating daan, Protestant, Muslim,Catholic, etc….!

    • sanjuan683

      • prince_janus

ayaw nila sumunod dahil immoral yan. read the bible & reflect!

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/276L22SZM5ZUQGV24IL4ZEF6UA Edward

go back to school and study sociology, politics, etc…study human being as social being and as political being bilang bhagi ng sibilisadong lipunan na dapat makialam sa gawain ng isang lipunan…

indeed, little learning is a very dangerous thing…
