“Drop, cover, hold … and take selfie! WTF!”

You can take a Filipino netizen out of an earth-shaken building but can you take him out of his instinct to send out a selfie?

Seems not, according to netizens who chided other users who posted their selfies before, during and after the Metro-wide earthquake drill on Thursday.

“Akala ko earthquake drill, bakit naging selfie drill (I thought this was an earthquake drill, why did this become a selfie drill)?” netizen @banat101 said on Twitter.

“Earthquake drill pero nag-seselfie? Grabe nman! Seryosohin nyo po yang earthquake drill na yan (It was an earthquake drill but they’re sending selfies. Let us be serious with earthquake drills)!” netizen @ArianneVivi posted using the hashtags #MMShakeDrill and #MMQuakeDrill.

“People had their phones raised to take pictures of the #MMShakeDrill … really people? REALLY!!? that’s what you’re concerned of??” said netizen @giselleiswell.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake triggered by a movement in the long-dormant West Valley Fault had been anticipated to shake Metro Manila. The first massive quake drill was held to prepare residents and lessen casualty.

Organized by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MDA), the drill was welcomed by netizens and celebrities in general.

Actress Judy Ann Santos @officialjuday posted an advice on her Twitter account @officialjuday: “Lahat po tayo ay sumunod at makinig sa nagaganap na earthquake drill (Let us all follow what is happening in this drill).”

“And not to make light of the whole affair, always be prepared and be informed!” musician-artist Ely Buendia posted, using his account @elybuendia9001

But the drill also turned into hugot moments for some netizens.

“#MMShakeDrill ka ba? Kasi yung pag-ibig mo sakin practice lang eh! (Are you on a drill? Seems your love for me is a drill!)” netizen @tiantolentino said.

“Kapag sumali ba ako sa #MMShakeDrill mashshake din ba yang puso mo na mahalin din ako? (If I join the #MMShakeDrill, will I be able to shake your heart so you would love me?)” netizen @MrTheReal said.

MMDA commended

“Kahit drill lang yung kanina (Even if it was only a drill), the adrenaline was real. Intense kober,” said netizen @AlvnKasiban

“Wow! Whole Philippines is in #MMShakeDrill! Great work @MMDA and participants! ” said @kikoypalaboy

“I commend the MMDA and all organizers of #MMSHakeDrill for a job well done! It’s not perfect but it’s a great start,” said netizen @jaytrixz

“Tired. Exhausted. Pero alam ko na ang gagawin ko kapag nangyari ang lindol (Now I know what I will do if there is an earthquake): Let us pray na hindi na mangyari ang lindol (that the earthquake would not come),” netizen @Madyasangoyo20 said.0

And a reminder from petlover @besanti: “Realization: need to remind people at home to also bring dogs under the table and out the house in case of evacuation.” With a report from Ramon Royandoyan
