Earpiece offers real-time live speech translation of languages

Soon, language barriers will be torn down with this translator that can operate as a cutting-edge ‘lingua franca’.

Waverly Labs, a start-up company from Manhattan, New York, is developing a groundbreaking earpiece that can provide near real-time translations of multilingual conversations.

The stunning headpiece, called Pilot, allows two people who speak different languages to understand each other audibly. It’s an earpiece which uses translation technology and is paired with a built-in app which toggles between the two languages.

Divergent to other translation software, Pilot’s vanguard pledge to customers is that it can intertwine live translation into a wearable device by whispering the translation into the listener’s ear, according to tech site Gizmag.

FEATURED STORIES

For example, if a user happens to wear the earpiece with a person who speaks fluent French, the person’s speech will be translated to the other person’s native tongue and vice versa, according to tech news site The Next Web. The earpiece will communicate with the corresponding built-in smartphone app to generate a written translation.

Two participants will be needed to effectively carry out the live translation. Hence, the product will be sold in pairs.

As noticed, this feature has similarities with Skype’s in-call translation, which is available for voice and video calls. Other attempts to revolutionize live translation are conceptualized – Google Translate and Microsoft Live Translator are developing real-time conversation translation in mobile and desktop applications.

As of the moment, Germanic, Latin, and European languages are available for live translation, as the company is still engineering its Asian language translation. Pilot will be available for pre-order on May 25. It will be sold in the US for $299 (PHP 13,915). Gianna Francesca Catolico
