Young ‘feral girl’ living with monkeys rescued in Indian forest

A real life “Mowgli” from the popular children’s fable “Jungle Book” was rescued in Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Bahraich, northern India, after being discovered living with monkeys.

The feral girl, whom hospital officials deemed was 8 years old, did not appear to understand language and could only walk on all fours, The Huffington Post reported.

Two months back, police officers were patrolling the area close to the Nepalese border when they found the girl along with a group of monkeys. She shrieked loudly upon being discovered by the authorities, the report said.

“She was terrified of us, she could not speak or hear us properly,” one of the inspectors at the scene, Ram Avtar Singh, was quoted as saying.

Singh also noticed  that the girl’s clothes were not very dirty and seemed like she was abandoned by her family. Authorities safely captured the poor girl and  admitted her to a district hospital in Bahraich.

“The girl was found two months ago, eats and walks like an animal and runs away on seeing humans,” the hospital’s chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinesh Singh described their new patient.

“She has marks on her skin, looks like she has lived with animals for quite some time. Now she is better and healthy, showing improvement.”

Authorities, meanwhile, have yet to identify the child’s immediate family. If remained unclaimed, the girl will reportedly be sent to the government’s child protection department.  Khristian Ibarrola /ra
