FEATURED STORIES

“Mahirap pala maging social media influencer”quipped Atty. Oscar Franklin Barcelona Tan in his Inquirer column on Monday.

Oscar is representing the Philippines in “Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World,” the world’s most prestigious youth award. The problem is, there is an online voting component.

He is #6 out of 20 right now, how can he get to the top?

Oscar can get cited in a Supreme Court opinion, but has no idea how to get all his friends—and countrymen—to click https://toyp.jci.cc and vote for him!

What does the Marketing Mentor recommend?

1. Get help from Anne Curtis

Anne Curtis (@annecurtissmith) has 9.24 million Twitter followers! One tweet from her and instant win!

Can one of our Market Masters give Oscar Anne’s number ASAP?

But sorry Oscar, she’s engaged.

  1. Start a social media fight

Nothing gets more attention on social media than a fight. Think Mocha Uson versus Agot Isidro. Baron Geisler versus Kiko Matos. Josiah Go versus George Clooney.

Wait, Oscar actually started one last Tuesday.

It all began when he wrote in his column that Rep. Miro Quimbo can get thousands of votes in an election but could not get dozens of likes for the best picture contest of his son’s school.

Here’s the Twitter transcript:

@oscarfbtan: Sure 100,000 votes from Marikina @miroquimbo?

@miroquimbo: Sure. Got 200 votes for my son but I’m sure we’ll do better. Wait, 100K, that’s more than the votes I got despite being unopposed.

@sotto_tito: @oscarfbtan @miroquimbo parang kaunti naman kayang vote ng marikina. Alert ko QC @jvejercito

@sotto_tito: @mhmbautista lets do this Mayor @oscarfbtan

@miroquimbo: Tito Sen! Patay tayo dyan. Yung 100K kasi, si Tito Sen Lang at @jvejercito nakakakuha nyan sa Marikina.

@miroquimbo: Maybe our idol @sonnyangara can do better and pledge the entire province of Aurora?

@sonnyangara: kelangan magtanggal ng shirt so miro to rope in the votes

@oscarfbtan: Kung para sa buong Aurora, game daw si @miroquimbo

@oscarfbtan: Kayang kaya mo yan idol! I believe in you!

@miroquimbo: Marami nang nagsabi nyan na nabigo. LOL.

@oscarfbtan: Sanay naman tayong mabigo idol. #Hugot

(Sen. Risa Hontiveros was also spotted making a late arrival to the Twitter ribbing.)

Next time, Oscar, just pick a fight with Anne Curtis.

  1. Make a #HUGOT video

The best social media content shares itself. What better example than content that users are dying to share than Jollibee’s #Hugot videos (Crush-Date-Vow) from last February? They were so engaging that users created their own memes to share after the videos.

So, Oscar, just write yourself a script, find a girl to friendzone you, and open Facebook Live!

  1. Post more food pictures

Before asking your friends to vote, you need to entertain them with pictures. Food is easiest since you have to eat sometime.

Just exert a little effort.

Post “deep fried plantain topped with caramelized muscovado served on wood sliver” (in Tagalog, banana cue).

Post Jesus appearing in the cream of your coffee (if you look hard enough).

Post with an awkward angle, a hand gesture or something catchy in the distance.

Never fails.

  1. Just vote for Oscar now!

Seriously, Atty. Tan is a Harvard lawyer who changes how Filipinos discuss legal issues through his viral columns. He has written on martial law, Uber’s legality, free speech and fake news, the Reproductive Health Act, the Cybercrime Act, the Edsa Revolution, OFW rights and legal education. He taught Constitutional Law, was Co-Chair of the Constitutional Law Committee on the Philippine Bar Association, and has testified before Congress together with retired SC Justices. He was Chair of the Philippine Law Journal and set the UP Law record for legal writing awards won.
Let’s vote for Oscar! Go Philippines! (Anne Curtis, this means you!)
