Google goes social with Facebook rival

GOOGLE PLUS.  As the online world turns social with Facebook leading the way, Google's new Plus service represents its best shot yet at muscling into a market that has threatened to topple the Internet search leader. Google's task is to make its existing products social as "social" becomes the norm for online activity.

Google, the king of Internet search but a bust on the social front, launched its rival to Facebook on Tuesday, a social networking service called Google+.

Social media rules issued for athletes at Olympics

American sprinter Walter Dix being greeted by the crowd after winning the 200 meter race at the Athletissima in Lausanne, Switzerland. In a sport known for flash, sprinter Walter Dix must be careful not to utilize social networking and blogging "for commercial and/or advertising purposes”, something becoming harder to do after winning two bronze medals at the Beijing Olympics (AP Photo).

The International Olympic Committee has encouraged athletes to use social media at the 2012 London Games, although misusing Twitter and Facebook could result in them being excluded from competing.

US court overturns ban on video game sales to kids

APPROPRIATE ENTERTAINMENT.  The Supreme Court says California cannot ban the rental or sale of violent video games, such as Microsoft’s Bulletstorm, to children (AP Photo).

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to let California clamp down on the sale or rental of violent video games to children, saying governments lack authority to “restrict the ideas to which children may be exposed” despite complaints that the popular and fast-changing technology allows the young to simulate acts of brutality.
