Cebu once again grabbed the national karting spotlight after Juan Antonio Carcel bagged the crown in the Mini ROK division of the Shell National Karting at the Carmona Race Track in Cavite over the weekend.
Carcel, a grade 6 student of PAREF-Springdale, beat all the odds as he had to beat compatriot Jette Calderon and reigning Asian champion Christian Gaddi on his way to claiming the coveted crown.
Carcel showed superior driving skills far beyond his years as he bided his time and waited for the final lap to make his move. Stuck behind Calderon and Gaddi for most of the race, the youngster made a daring maneuver to overtake Calderon on the final turn, and speed his way to the checkered flag.
Carcel registered the best lap-time of the race of 49.2 seconds while Calderon was second in 49.35. Gaddi wound up in third spot clocking 49.54 seconds.
The 12-year old also added another trophy to his collection after finishing second in the Shell National Series in 2006 and 2007, grabbing six championship trophies along the way. He also competed in the Asian Karting Series in Macau and finished second there.
