IDC: Vendors shipped 291 million phones in Q1

MANILA, Philippines -- Mobile phone makers shipped more than 291 million units during the first three months this year but analyst IDC warns economic woes such as rising fuel prices may hamper demand later this year.

IDC's Q1 data shows total phones shipped grew 14.3 percent from last year.

Nokia remains the top vendor accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total market ahead of Samsung. Motorola, which recently spun off its mobile phone business into a separate unit, remains at number three but year-on-year shipment declined significantly at almost 40 percent.

South Korea's LG, in contrast, shipped 54 percent more phones than last year, overtaking Sony Ericsson for the number four spot.

The mobile phone market will be under increased pressure from a number of factors that compete for user spending, said Ramon Llamas, senior analyst for Massachusetts-based IDC.

"Disposable income is being eroded by rising food and fuel prices and worries about global financial markets and slow economic growth are creating a cautious outlook for the months ahead," said Llamas.

For vendors, he cited potential growth in emerging markets due to demand for low-cost phones. In contrast, he said more mature regions are increasingly characterized by highly competitive markets for replacement handsets and somewhat slower shipment growth.
