MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) said its mobile phone subscriber base has reached more than 32 million, combining Smart and Talk N' Text subscribers.

Smart ended the first quarter with 20.6 million subscribers while Talk N' Text had 11 million subscribers at the end of the same period. Smart and Talk N' Text added 280,000 and 1.25 million subscribers, respectively, during the first quarter.

The company’s total subscriber base surpassed 32 million by the end of April, PLDT said in its first quarter financial statement.

PLDT said wireless service revenues grew eight percent this year to P22.5 billion.

"Despite the increasingly difficult economic environment, Smart sustained its strong subscriber numbers as we persevered with our efforts at finding creative solutions and meet our markets' needs," said Napoleon Nazareno, president and CEO of PLDT and Smart.

Meanwhile, total revenues from broadband and Internet services reached P2.5 billion, or 51 percent higher than last year. PLDT said its broadband subscriber base now exceeds 661,000 customers.

Smart Bro, Smart's wireless broadband service, added 48,000 subscribers in the first quarter, expanding the total number of installations to 348,000 end-users.

Wireless broadband revenues grew to about P919 million in the first quarter, compared to P414 million for the same period in 2007.
