Pension, loan encashment made available using ‘e-cards’

BANTAYAN ISLAND, Cebu -- The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) will deploy wireless point-of-sale (POS) systems in post offices nationwide that would allow GSIS members to encash pension or loans using "e-cards."

GSIS is targeting to deploy wireless POS terminals in more than 3,000 PhilPost offices nationwide, said GSIS director Ed Ocampo.

"Our target is to deploy these wireless POS readers in remote areas where there are no ATMs," Ocampo said in an interview with INQUIRER.net during the launch of the GSIS Voice-Activated Processing System here.

Upon swiping the e-card in the POS reader, the system automatically debits the amount from the pensioner's ATM account and credits to PhilPost, which then disburses cash as pension or loan.

Ocampo said more than 400 wireless POS terminals have been deployed at M. Lhuiller pawnshops since last year.

The project is part of GSIS' modernization plans started five years ago, incorporating mobile and Web-based technologies to automate services. The agency has spent around P500 million to P600 million since then, according to GSIS president and general manager Winston Garcia.
