MANILA, Philippines -- The 2001 “EDSA Dos” popular uprising that ousted former president Joseph Estrada is often called the “text revolution” because it was the use of the short messaging system that called many people to take to the streets.
Now, groups seeking to oust President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo have launched an “online revolution” they hope meets with the same success.
A group of bloggers have launched the website http://ousttheimp.wordpress.com calling for the removal of Arroyo through the impeachment process.
"The more we allow thieves to steal, the more misery we get. The more we procrastinate, the more we allow people to oppress us. Gloria should be punished now!" a message on the site says.
On Wednesday, the group, led by Manolo Quezon III and Richard Rivera, also filed an intervening motion seeking to add the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) as one of the charges in the impeachment complaint filed against Arroyo.
In an interview, Rivera said they plan to use the site to "expose" the corruption in the Arroyo government.
With some 3.1 million bloggers in the country, he said they are hoping the site generates interest and support for the impeachment.
"If EDSA Dos, we planned it through texting, now it's a new kind of revolution," he said.
