WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley has already given up on hopes of facing superstar Manny Pacquiao this year, pointing out that the Filipino icon has clearly set his sights on Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions of which Mosley is one of the partners, told the Los Angeles Times that Mosley has given him the marching order to stop attempts at luring Pacquiao to a fight this year.
?Shane says he'll be the last man standing, anyway,? Schaefer told The Times. ?Shane's legacy is intact, and it's not dependent on a Pacquiao yes or no,? added Schaefer.
Mosley, according to the report, has asked Schaefer to explore possible fights with WBC champion Andre Berto, and former champions Kermit Cintron, Paul Williams and Joshua Clottey.
The plan is to fight one of those boxers later this year on HBO, then pursue a fight with Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather next year.
Pacquiao is currently on the thick of negotiations for a November 14 superbout with Cotto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for the Puerto Rican's WBO title.
WBO president Paco Valcarcel had earlier indicated that the organization is poised to sanction the fight as a championship bout, although both camps are slated to fight at a catchweight of 145 lbs.
Pacquiao is expected to sign the deal in the next few days after going over the proposal made by promoter Bob Arum and handcarried by his associate Michael Koncz.
