COTABATO CITY, Philippines ? Tropical storm "Ondoy", whose wrath was largely confined to Luzon, sparked a five-hour power outage in the whole of North Cotabato on Sunday as the weather disturbance left the Philippine area of responsibility.
Felix Canja, assistant manager of the Cotabato Electric Cooperative, said Sunday's moderate rainfall but fairly strong wind spawned by Ondoy toppled a cross-arm of the 69-KV transmission tower, located in Barangay (Village) New Rizal in Mlang, North Cotabato.
He said the Cotelco's transmission line connected to the geothermal power source at Mt. Apo was severed.
North Cotabato and other Mindanao provinces draw their energy supply either from the state-owned hydro-power plant in Lanao del Sur or the geothermal power plant in North Cotabato.
According to Canja, the repair crew that he deployed to the problem area was able to restore electricity by 7 p.m. after more than five hours of without power.
