MANILA, Philippines – Imagine this: You are still pumped up after watching a music concert with friends. While waiting for the crowd to thin out, you excitedly scroll through Instagram again and the gazillion selfies and HD videos you took. What a night!
You head to the exit, part ways with your friends, and whip out your smartphone again to book a ride home. The dreaded warning flashed – ‘10% battery life remaining.’ You hurriedly try to book, but with many others booking their rides, you are unable to. Meanwhile, your battery is draining. Finally, it sounds out the last warning, and dies. You are stranded and on your own. Without a ride home. What a night.
It’s an all too familiar scenario and an all too familiar love-hate relationship with our phones – they abandon us at most inconvenient times. Most top-of-the-line smartphones boast great specifications but fall short on delivering the full experience because their batteries are not powerful enough.
When it comes to user expectations, power means long battery life. As innovations in mobile technology advances, the battery has become one of the key features smartphone users look out for when making a purchase.
A smartphone to watch out for in the market is TECNO Mobile’s latest Pouvoir 4. It’s very affordable at PhP4,590, and it features an enormous 6000mAh battery, capable of powering the phone for four days straight with just a single charge!

If you still struggle to get the most out of your smartphone battery, here are five practical tips:
Switch off vibration mode
Vibration mode comes in very handy when you are in a meeting, but if it is not needed, switch it off. Research shows that vibration mode uses more battery power than ringtones. The sounds produced by ringtones are just very tiny vibrations in your smartphone’s speaker, but when your phone vibrates, it consumes more power.
Reduce your screen brightness
Dimming your screen will reduce your smartphone’s battery consumption. If your screen is brightly lit up every couple of minutes when you check messages or emails, it will drain your battery.
Shorten screen timeout
This is something we often do not pay attention to. Once we are done using our phone, we usually tend to set it aside without realizing that the screen remains lit for a while. Some of us also do not have the habit of ‘locking’ our phone after we are done. Keeping the timeout duration shorter will ensure that the phone does not waste power when not in use.
Close all unnecessary apps
We often open one app after another and do not bother to close them. The apps end up running in the background. This is one of the main reasons why batteries get drained so quickly. Remember to close apps that are not in use.
Disable GPS or location setting
Your smartphone usually has a GPS unit that sends and receives signals to and from satellites to determine your exact location. We use this feature to find places near us or to check travel distance. Apps use them too, so once you are done using location-based apps, close it or disable the feature – you will see a difference in the battery life.
