Last April 27, Globe officially launched the country’s first-ever 5G Hackathon in a virtual event attended by media partners and guests.
Partnering with De La Salle University’s Animo Labs, Globe is opening the competition to students, professionals, and startups hungry to dive into innovation and digital learning.
The competition will focus on the use of 5G technologies in three sectors of the Philippine economy, namely: 5G for Society – Education, Health Care, and Livelihood; 5G for Industries – Retail, Manufacturing, Logistics, E-Commerce; and 5G for Smart Cities – Disaster risk management, Sustainability, Asset and Resource Management, Transportation.
The competition will be divided into two parts, the Pitch and the Hackathon, with a total of P500,000 in cash prizes and endless learning opportunities from SMEs and industry leaders through mentoring and workshops. On top of that, the Hackathon winners will get a unique chance to be part of 917Ventures’ Velocity, a venture builders program and work directly with the Globe 5G Acceleration Lab.
In the virtual event, Globe’s Chief Commercial Officer Issa Guevarra-Cabreira welcomes everyone to the media launch and shares the goal of the 5G Hackathon: “We see a Philippines where families’ dreams come true, businesses flourish, and the nation is admired.”
Participants of the 5G Hackathon will have the chance to learn from world-class speakers from international tech partners, and will undergo workshops in 5G and Enabled Technologies, Design Thinking, Prototyping, and the Basics of Pitching.
The hackathon will have its own innovative space for all participants—the Virtual Hangouts. This virtual space will have areas for participants to meet, collaborate, and explore innovative ideas. Head of Globe Prepaid Eric Tanbauco shares what participants can expect in the Virtual Hangouts, which includes a main hall, a time capsule area, and a photo booth.
Also during the virtual event, Korean actor Kim Seon Ho, which stars is the hit k-drama Start-Up, gives a few words of encouragement to all those who want to join in Globe’s 5G Hackathon.
“We commit to enabling the youth to carve out their own digital futures, and transform various industries in the Philippines into digital innovation hubs. Together, we will explore new technologies like 5G with resources that can further their skills and enrich their case studies. Globe is their willing partner in this learning opportunity,” said KD Dizon, Globe’s Head of Consumer Mobile Business.
