In a time when everything is interconnected, mobile operator networks in the Philippines play a crucial role in delivering absolute and seamless connectivity for all Filipino users. With yearly shifts that are unprecedented in speed, mobile networks unceasingly revolutionize solutions that will guarantee breakthroughs and better experiences, always with the mobile user in mind.
There was a time when gadgets served only limited purposes until the pandemic changed every user’s behavior and everyone’s perception of technology. Now, cellular phones, laptops, desktops, and tablets have become channels not only for connecting, communicating, and interacting with people, but it has also been crucial for our day-to-day personal and professional routines such as work, education, shopping, entertainment, gaming, and even the way we do business or take care of our finances.
The 5G technology, for instance, which is currently at the forefront of telecommunication, has enhanced and restructured everyone’s mobile experience with its lightning-fast speeds and gigantic device capability, unraveling an overabundance of opportunities for carriers and users who aspire for ultra-high-definition streaming to engrossing virtual reality experiences. Apart from that, users need a new-fangled era of connectivity which will empower them with instantaneous data transfers, split second access to cloud services, and real-time communication thus, the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT promotes an unfettered connected ecosystem tasked to transform the outlook of mobile operator networks. There is also a high demand for enhanced security and privacy solutions, and with Edge Computing to accommodate the cumulative demands of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), to name a few. As for work, business, and healthcare systems, users would need real-time data processing and analysis.
Opensignal’s Mobile Experience Report 2023
With this plethora of expected and much sought after mobile user experience, Opensignal—the leading independent global provider of insights and data integrating network experience and market performance across converged, wireless, and broadband operators—has recently released a its 2023 Mobile Network Experience Report (Philippines, April 2023, Mobile Network Experience Report | Opensignal), revealing which Philippine-based mobile network has improved its network, delivered customer-centric mobile experience, and maximized commercial performance.
Here are the mobile metric study’s key findings:
- In Q1 of 2023, Globe users have the best experience when it comes streaming video, playing multiplayer mobile games, and using voice apps, in general and on 5G Globe. The network has attained a noteworthy achievement, even superseding its rival, as the outright winner for all three overall experiential awards such as the Video Experience, Games Experience, Voice App Experience.
- Globe Telecoms is also the sole winner of the corresponding 5G experience awards, as it retains 5G Video Experience and now lords it over with 5G Games Experience and 5G Voice App Experience outright, after statistically tying with its closest competitor for first place for both awards.
- Even with the arrival of a new player, Globe continues to be bullish in its supremacy in the whole mobile network landscape, defeating other mobile networks, as Globe users’ average download speeds have risen to 2.1Mbps or 14.8%. The study also pointed that in the aspect of Upload Speed Experience, Globe had the largest increase at 0.9Mbps (26.1%).
- Globe users experienced the excellent year-on-year improvement in Games Experience and Voice App Experience out of all the Southeast Asian network operators analyzed with impressive increases of 31.8% and 10.8%, respectively.
- “Globe is the new outright winner of the Video Experience award —replacing the previous winner, by giving the best experience on average in the Philippines when streaming mobile video over cellular connections (measured across all generations of mobile technology). When it comes to the overall video experience of our 5G users (Video Experience – 5G Users), Globe 5G users claimed that they had the best experience” the Opensignal study concluded.
- Globe remains to be the leader in mobile and the country’s most reliable mobile network. In fact, it officially received recognition from Opensignal’s Mobile Experience Awards for 5G Video Experience, 5G Upload Speed and Core Consistent Quality in the Philippines during the recently concluded 2023 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona recently.
This Opensignal study of the three leading mobile operators in the Philippines has been conducted in the 90 days (commencing on January 1 until March 31,2023), or the first quarter of 2023, and has covered both regional and national scope. Opensignal’s Video Experience quantifies the quality of video streamed to mobile devices by measuring real-world video streams over an operator’s networks. The metric is based on an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approach, built upon detailed studies which have derived a relationship between technical parameters, including picture quality, video loading time and stall rate, with the perceived video experience as reported by real people.
To calculate video experience, Opensignal is directly measuring video streams from end-user devices and using this ITU approach to quantify the overall video experience for each operator on a scale from 0 to 100. The videos tested include a mixture of resolutions—including Full HD (FHD) and 4K / Ultra HD (UHD)—and are streamed directly from the world’s largest video content providers.
