The next generation must adapt to artificial intelligence as it changes the world they will enter after graduation. Fortunately, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Edu.
The official product page describes it as a “version of ChatGPT built for universities to responsibly deploy AI to students, faculty, researchers, and campus operations.”

The company provided a few examples of its applications to show universities its benefits. Soon, your local college might deploy this system!
What are ChatGPT Edu’s applications?
OpenAI saw the wondrous ways universities were using ChatGPT. Consequently, it developed an educational version with the following features:
- It provides access to the latest flagship model, GPT-4o, which excels in interpreting text, coding, and teaching mathematics.
- ChatGPT Edu has advanced capabilities like data analytics, document summarization, and web browsing.
- The new AI model can build custom versions of ChatGPT called GPTs and share them within university workspaces.
- This AI program has significantly higher message limits than the free version.
- It supports over 50 languages with superior quality and speed.
- The program has powerful robust security, data privacy, and administrative controls like group permissions, SSO, and GPT management. Soon, OpenAI will make SCIM available for ChatGPT Edu and Enterprise, which is the business version.
The new AI model also protects user privacy by not using conversations and data for training. OpenAI says it built the Edu version because it saw how other universities were successfully applying it to learning experiences:
- Professor Nabila El-Bassel at Columbia University and her team built a GPT that analyzes and synthesizes large datasets to inform interventions. As a result, the technology reduces weeks of research into seconds.
- Undergraduate and MBA students in Professor Ethan Mollick’s courses at Wharton completed their final reflection assignments by discussing with ChatGPT. They claim the AI helped them think more deeply about what they’ve learned.
- Christiane Reves, an assistant professor at Arizona State University, is developing a custom Language Buddies GPT for Students. It will engage them in German conversations suited to their language proficiency while giving feedback. As a result, the AI will help students build communication skills and save faculty time on assessments.
ChatGPT is available worldwide, so we should expect the Edu version to become available in our local schools soon.
