The International Space Station deployed its first generative AI large language model from US-based AI-tech firm Booz Allen Hamilton.
The generative AI LLM or large language model will allow the space facility to gather and process more data faster than ever.

This artificial intelligence will also enable this feature in disconnected environments, such as extreme conditions on Earth and in space.
What are the Space AI’s features?
Interesting Engineering reports Booz Allen Hamilton completed installing a Hewlett-Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) Spaceborne Computer-2 that contained the latest AI system.
Booz Allen developed the AI model to help “edge-deployed personnel” perform various tasks. These include retrieving relevant information efficiently, interpreting it accurately, and solving complex space issues.
The International Space Station traditionally gathered data aboard the research outpost and sent it to Earth for processing. The onboard supercomputer’s space AI enables the ISS to evaluate data in low-Earth orbit in near-real-time.
As a result, it achieves a 30,000 times reduction in download size. The HPE says these features significantly reduce download times in space.
“This type of breakthrough result by the Booz Allen team is exactly in line with the mission and purpose of the HPE Spaceborne platform,” said Norm Follett, the senior director of global marketing at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise.
“To make what was previously unattainable not just possible but also deployable,” he added.
Chris Bogdan, Booz Allen Hamilton’s executive vice president, shared his excitement about the future of this project.
“Booz Allen is thrilled to be at the cutting edge of this exciting development and is committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with AI and other mission-critical technologies in space.”
“Generative AI in space is truly the new frontier, and this capability unlocks the potential for on-orbit generative AI to integrate and develop mission-critical solutions and is aligned with Booz Allen’s mission to build human-led AI solutions from which our nation will thrive.”
