ChatGPT Canvas: a reliable AI writing and coding companion

On October 3, 2024, OpenAI launched the open beta of its new writing and coding interface called ChatGPT Canvas.

The tool lets users ask ChatGPT for revisions and suggestions while working on a single window. As a result, users experience a smoother AI-powered workflow.

The official website says the company rolled out the feature for ChatGPT Plus and Team users worldwide. Free users will soon have access once the open beta ends.

How does ChatGPT Canvas work?

Canvas is a word processing tool built into the ChatGPT platform, and it is accessible via the model picker on the top of the window.

Start working with this new AI tool by writing directly in its window. Afterward, highlight words to ask ChatGPT for improvements.

Alternatively, select words and say “use canvas” to activate the new tool. Then, ChatGPT Canvas will add or reduce content to enhance your work.

In contrast, other AI tools like Grammarly only suggest grammar and spelling revisions. ChatGPT goes a step further by adjusting the reading level of a selected text, from Kindergarten to Graduate School proficiency.

High school or college users may likely love Canvas as it can search for real-world data online to support their claims, making it a handy research buddy.

On the other hand, Canvas can add emojis to make your text more fun!

Once finished, the Final Polish button can be clicked to have ChatGPT Canvas check your work. It will then give suggestions on how to refine grammar and tone, ensuring the text is concise and readable.

This new AI tool also helps IT professionals by reviewing code and providing inline suggestions. Moreover, it can insert print statements and comments to facilitate debugging and understanding the code.

ChatGPT Canvas can detect and fix bugs and port a user’s code to other languages like JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, and PHP.

This new AI tool is available for those with a paid ChatGPT Plus or Team subscription. Access will be open to everyone once the closed beta period ends.
