The terrifying rise of deepfakes, it really is harder and harder to trust the internet
If you’ve been online lately, you’ve probably seen it: enter a streamer saying something wild on TikTok and supporting gambling. A celebrity wearing out of character clothes. Or even a video call from a “relative” or anyone you may know asking for urgent help.
But the truth is, it’s not them.
Welcome to the deepfake era; where anyone’s face, voice, and identity can be copied with alarming accuracy. And according to recent security data, the problem is already bigger than most people realize.
In 2025, the digital world hit a tipping point. Advances in generative AI made creating convincing fake videos easier, cheaper, and faster than ever.
Security company iProov reported that it processed over one million identity verifications per day in 2025, a sign of just how much organizations are scrambling to defend themselves against AI-powered impersonation. Instead of hackers trying to break systems, many are simply pretending to be someone else.
A study cited by the firm found that 62% of organizations experienced a deepfake attack in the past year. That’s not a niche threat anymore, that’s practically mainstream cybercrime.
For years, cybersecurity focused on keeping attackers out. Now the bigger problem is attackers logging in as you. The tables have indeed been turned.
Deepfakes in numbers
Deepfake tools can generate fake faces, mimic voices, and even inject manipulated video streams into authentication systems. According to iProov’s 2025 threat intelligence report, attacks involving AI-generated identity manipulation are skyrocketing:
- 2,665% surge in virtual camera attacks
- 300% increase in face-swap attempts
These methods allow attackers to bypass identity checks that rely on selfies, webcams, or recorded verification videos. What’s worse is that this is fast-becoming an industry with someone getting rich off of your likeness or information.
Security analysts are increasingly seeing Crime-as-a-Service operations where criminals sell deepfake tools, stolen identities, and ready-to-use attack kits.
In a consumer study of 2,000 people, only 0.1% could reliably identify deepfake media accurately.
That means almost nobody can tell the difference between real footage and AI-generated impersonation. Not your parents. Not your coworkers. Probably not you. Deepfakes first went viral through celebrity impersonations, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Today it’s a different ball game. It’s crypto scams featuring fake celebrity endorsements orImpersonated streamers promoting phishing links. Identity is quickly becoming the new security perimeter; whether it’s logging into a bank, verifying a passport, or even using your own phone.
That’s why governments and companies are now investing heavily in advanced biometric verification and independent security testing to detect synthetic media before it slips through the cracks.
But technology alone won’t solve the problem.
The First Real Line of Defense Is Awareness
The biggest danger with deepfakes isn’t just the technology, it’s how believable they are. A convincing fake only needs one moment of trust to succeed.
So the next time you see a viral clip of a streamer saying something outrageous or a celebrity promoting an unbelievable deal, it’s worth asking one question:
Is this real? Double source. Fact check. In the same way we learn how to drive defensively in driving school, the same skillset and discernment should be applied in what we take in from the Internet.
