NEW YORK—Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and analysis of what consumers watch and buy, launched Nielsen Topten, a mobile app that provides insight into trends across a variety of media and product categories.

“We’re excited that this product was envisioned, developed and launched by a talented team of early-career associates,” said Mitchell Habib, chief operating officer.

“This new app provides consumers with a single source for viewing diverse categories of top content and products based on objective data. It’s a unique new tool, available nowhere else, to understand what people are actually watching and buying in their communities,” Habib added.

App categories span TV shows, music, movies, websites, books, video games, mobile apps and consumer products, such as cosmetics, candy and beer.

Users of Nielsen Topten will be able to personalize their views of the lists based on customized demographics, such as age, location and gender. All categories and lists will be presented in English and will be based on Nielsen data drawn from US consumers. The app will be initially available in the US for iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

“Mobile devices are revolutionizing more than just communication. They are increasingly the closest available screen for consumers, changing the way we interact with other people, make purchasing decisions and even define our communities,” said Paul Donato, chief research officer.

“As mobile becomes more ubiquitous, putting our popular top 10 lists into the hands and pockets of consumers was a logical next step,” he added.

With the announcement of Nielsen Topten is a 10-day, 10-city bus tour of universities around the United States, including New York University, Tufts University, Virginia Tech, Howard University and the University of Wisconsin, to introduce the app to college students.

The bus tour celebrates the launch of Nielsen Topten through local events at each school, including a silent disco, interactive tent and custom top 10 lists, with content based on insights from students on each campus.

As Nielsen celebrates its 90th anniversary, Nielsen Topten is the latest innovation in a long line of “firsts.” Arthur C. Nielsen, Sr., founded Nielsen in 1923. The company was the first to offer market research (1927), the first to measure food sales (1934) and the first to use a computer for measurement (1954), among many other innovations.

To download the app, visit the Apple Store or Google Play.
