MANILA, Philippines – After only a few hours online, a “hate page” devoted to a Facebook user who allegedly posted racist comments against Miss World Megan Young has gained almost 9,000 likes.
Filipino netizens are now campaigning against a Facebook user who called Young a “maid” and her win as Miss World a “joke.”
Blog sites have been abuzz in the last several hours, posting the girl’s comments against Filipinos and Miss Philippines, while her name has been the number one trending topic on Twitter.
“Miss Philippines is Miss World? What a joke! I did not know those maids have anything else in them Ha Ha Ha,” said one screen-captured post.
The Singapore-based woman, who will not be named in this article, also responded to people defending Filipinos by saying that “[Filipino women] are poor, smelly from cleaning toilets, and uneducated.”
The post, which has reportedly been deleted, had received thousands of shares and hundreds of comments.
In the thread, the woman defended her opinion, saying “[Filipinos] are less privileged everywhere! [I am] surprised one can win. What a joke those people cleaning our toilets won Miss World.”
The hate page, which posted photos of the woman, has called for her public apology.
“What is wrong with cleaning toilets huh? Those Filipinos whom you referred as MAIDS have only sacrificed being away from their own families and serve others not related to them just to give their loved ones a better future,” said one post.
Another said, “She’s unbelievable. We Filipinos may not be the richest and most successful but we deserve RESPECT. She should apologize.”
Megan Young is the first Filipino to win the Miss World title. Her coronation last Saturday in Bali, Indonesia had kept social media busy with cheers and praises for the young actress. With a report from Bayani San Diego Jr.
