MANILA, Philippines—Your boss puts premium on quantity and speed. You want quality.
And the notion of meeting halfway seems far-fetched.
Marina Shifrin decides to call it quits. But no, she won’t hit the keyboard to compose an impassive corporate farewell letter for her boss at Taiwan-based Next Media Animation, a company that creates humorous videos about news events.
Instead, shortly before dawn one day Shifrin turns the empty office into a big dance floor to make her resignation piece—an interpretative “I quit” dance video that she posted on YouTube on September 28.
“I work for an awesome company that makes news videos,” says the native of suburban Chicago in the introduction of her video titled An Interpretive Dance For My Boss Set To Kanye West’s Gone.
“I have put my life into this job, but my boss says quantity, speed and views are what is most important.”
The 24-year-old video editor thinks otherwise.
“I believe it’s more important to focus on the quality of the content. When you learn to improve this, the views will come,” says the University of Missouri graduate.
“So I figured, I’d make one video of my own to focus on the content instead of worry about the views,” says Shifrin.
“Here is a little video I made explaining my feelings.”
Soon, her dance video became a big hit on the web. As of this posting, the dance piece got more that 14 million views on YouTube. It has been reposted on the video-sharing site and other social networking websites.
Next Media’s bosses responded, announcing through a dance video, too, they’re accepting Shifrin’s resignation. Her colleagues served as backup dancers.
A subtitle at the end of their dance video, read: “We’re hiring.”
