Netizens to Fortun: You did the right thing

MANILA, Philippines – Lawyer Raymond Fortun just got what he wanted – the approval of netizens.

After resigning as businessman Cedric Lee’s lawyer, citing a broken agreement, Fortun received the praise of Filipinos over social media.

His announcement came after video footage supposedly showing Lee kissing Deniece Cornejo inside an elevator was released. The two were accused of conspiring against and having actor Vhong Navarro beaten up.

On Facebook, Fortun’s post explaining his resignation has received at least 1,600 likes as of 4:20 p.m. on Monday.

Many said it was the right decision and that what is important is that he has a clear conscience.

“Stand proud” some told him while others said they had high respect for the lawyer.

In his post, Fortun said the country was “just not ready to be fair.”

“The next time something like this happens, do reflect on why even the worst criminal is entitled to be represented by a lawyer, and why whatever hate you may have for that person should NEVER extend to someone who is just doing his duty under our laws,” he said.

In an interview in a morning talk show, Fortun admitted that he was affected by the criticisms published online against him.

“They seemed to have failed to understand that the right to freedom to express their opinion does not include the right to destroy the reputation for the wrong reason,” he said.

On Twitter, many were also pleased with his resignation.

“Fortun just made the right decision,” said Plaeya Magos (@plaeyaHOLIC).

Another Twitter user (@ANNthologist) said, “I admire the bravery of Atty. Fortun. I bet he chose his conscience over the money offered by Cedric Lee. Not all lawyers can do that. Bravo.”

“Great move, Atty. Fortun. The case is getting lame,” said Paula C. (@polapolapola).

But others pointed out that Fortun probably dropped the case because he realized it was a losing fight.
