POEA warns job seekers versus new e-mail scam

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has warned aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) against another e-mail scam enticing job seekers to apply for work in Canada.

The POEA, in its Twitter account, advised the public to ignore e-mails urging them to apply as nurse or caregiver at Canadian Virtual Hospice in Winnipeg, Canada.

The POEA said this is another e-mail scam that the public should not entertain.

In the e-mail, the recipient is told that he/she has been chosen as a candidate for the position of nurse or caregiver for the facility after posting his/her resume in an online job portal.

The e-mail says applying for the job has no hidden charges to the applicants because the employer will shoulder the airfare, work permit fee and working visa fee.

However, the “employer” says the applicant must pay for coaching fee and medical exam fee.

“The only expenses that you are going to shoulder are the medical exam fee and Canadian Virtual Hospice Embassy Coaching fee because this is on a direct/name hire basis,” according to the e-mail.

Attending the supposed “once-a-year only” two-day Canadian Virtual Hospice Embassy Coaching is one of the few requirements for the job, the e-mail added.

E-mail recipients are then asked to reserve a slot for the embassy coaching set on two consecutive dates by paying at their accredited payment center, including Western Union and/or LBC.

The POEA has repeatedly warned the public in the past against a new form of illegal recruitment in the form of immigration consultants and visa coaching.
