Marketers need to be in what Filipinos can’t live without

MANILA, Philippines—One thousand mobile users each from the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Vietnam were asked “which is one item that you could not do without for the rest of your life?” by Eden Strategy Institute. The study found that 59 percent of Filipino respondents chose mobile phones as the one thing they couldn’t afford to lose.

McDonald’s manager Christine Lao presented last July 9 at the Ad: Tech Asean that Filipinos spend an average of 5.5 hours online, 95 percent of which are on social media. She discussed how mobile creates a S.E.A of opportunities: sales, engagement, and awareness for companies like you.

With its high volume of usage and demand, how do Filipino marketers leverage on mobile? Let’s take a look at three out of the 10 cases tackled at the Mobile Marketing Academy.

First up is EMart. EMart is like the Walmart of Korea. The objective was to increase sales during lunch time. How was it achieved? EMart installed a unique “shadow QR code” for their Sunny Sale Website. The site can only be opened by capturing the QR code reflected by the 12 noon to 1 p.m. sunlight.

Another amazing mobile marketing integration was 13th Street, an interactive horror movie film. Viewers take part in the movie through voice recognition software and are able to navigate the protagonist’s action via voice commands. Each caller tells a different story.

The Sunshine Aquarium in Tokyo optimized location-based marketing by using real-time consumer location and penguin animation to direct locals and tourists how to get to the aquarium. All they had to do was follow the penguins on their screen. What a cute way to capture the market!

When you know mobile features inside-out, the possibilities to connect with consumers in fun and memorable ways become endless.

Be inspired to create imaginative marketing strategies driven by the one thing Filipinos can’t live without, the mobile.
