Golden rule of social media: Don’t be too serious

MANILA, Philippines – We Are Social agency reported last February that Filipinos spend an average of 6.2 hours surfing the web, the highest online usage in the APAC region.

About 32 percent or 34 million Filipinos are on social media and spend an average of four hours daily.

Komli Display and Engage (Social) found that in the Philippines, there are over 32 million active Facebook users, more than 16 million of which access the channel through mobile phones.

The same study by Komli Media reports that 9.5 million Filipinos are on Twitter. Three out of four users access the channel at least once a day, logs on via mobile, and follow a specific brand.

According to a study conducted by Jason Cruz, social products director for MRM/McCann, 62 percent of Filipino Instagram users take a selfie and 94 percent access the channel through mobile.

With these facts in mind, how do you ensure you’re doing social media right?

Rezza Custodio-Soriano, president for Team Planu Inc. discussed in the Certified Digital Marketer Program the golden rules of Social Media Marketing.

Her first words of advice – don’t be too serious. Brands need to develop a personality to be likeable. Practice how to engage with customers in fun and exciting ways to establish a connection. Rezza also points out that inbound marketing–such as blogs, newsletter subscriptions, and webinars–isn’t enough to do the job. You have to complement it with outbound marketing like paid promotions.

Add value to what you offer, provide well-produced and engaging content for your consumers and listen carefully to your audience. Don’t forget the value of peer to peer sharing. The marketing funnel doesn’t end at purchase but continues on to what they have to say about your products.

Social media give companies a voice and lets in customers on how much they value the relationship. How to properly communicate with consumers is a make or break. Take the chance to learn more about social media best practices and key strategies in Social Media Marketing 101.
