MANILA, Philippines–Three teams composed of students from public schools in Makati City garnered top spots in the recently concluded 13th Philippine Robotics Olympiad in Quezon City, and are set to compete at the 11th World Robot Olympiad (WRO) in Sochi, Russia, in November.
Dominico Idanan, superintendent of the Department of Education-Makati, said the team from West Rembo Elementary School was declared the champion in the regular category, elementary level.
Idanan said the winning team consists of Grade 6 students Danielle Orsua and James Paul Legaspi; and Grade 5 student John Paul Hernandez.
Apart from these students from West Rembo Elementary School, those from Pitogo High School team also won, placing second in the regular category, secondary level.
Idanan identified the second-placers as sophomore Dave Emmanuel Nuada, who teamed up with fourth year high school students Joevy Bargo Jr. and Daniel Figueroa.
Idanan added that the team composed of Francis Uriel Angat, Noah Christopher Tan and Mark Aljon Reales, all Grade 8 students, fielded by Benigno Aquino High School also placed second in the robot soccer category.
The WRO is a global robotics competition for the youth that “aims to maximize the students’ potentials and opportunities in science, technology and education spheres by developing their problem-solving skills, creativity and education level in various subjects including science and mathematics.”
Over 40 countries will participate in the WRO which has three categories: open, soccer and regular.
