MANILA, Philippines – South Korean smartphone company Samsung launched on Sunday, March 1 (Monday, Manila time) its new flagship smartphones the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge during the Samsung Unpacked 2015 in Barcelona, Spain.
The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge boast the following specs:
- 5.1-inch 2560×1440 Super AMOLED display with 577 PPI
- Octacore processor, 3GB LPDDR4 RAM
- 32/64/128GB Universal Flash Storage
- Android 5.0
- F/1.9 16MP rear camera with optical image stabilization and live HDR
- F/1.9 5MP front camera with live HDR
- Wi-Fi 802.11 AC with HT80 MIMO, Bluetooth LE, NFC, IR blaster
- Category 6 LTE with 300 Mbps down/50 Mbps up max theoretical speeds
- 2,550mAh (Galaxy S6) and 2,600mAh (Galaxy S6 edge) batteries
This time, Samsung deviated from its standard plastic setup as the phones are now built with combined metal and glass, giving it a more premium feel.
While the two may be similar on the inside, the S6 Edge slightly differs in design. Samsung says the S6 Edge is the world’s first dual-edge phone sporting a durable Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The edges function as a notification center even if the phone is placed upside down.
“We all thought it’s a thing of the future. This is a result of craftsmanship only Samsung can achieve,” boasts Younghee Lee.
Lee added the feature allows immersive viewing and more ergonomic grip.
Samsung decided to go with a built-in battery this time, ditching the old removable battery set up. It claims they didn’t go built-in until they haven’t mastered fast charging.
It claims the phone needs only 10 minutes of charging time to acquire 4 hours’ worth of battery. The unit is also capable of charging wireless through WPC and PMA wireless charging standards.
The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are available in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, Blue Topaz and Green Emerald (exclusively for Galaxy S6).
Both phones will be available worldwide on April 10.
