ALOR SETAR, Malaysia — Muslim Community Association (MCA) has slammed controversial blogger Alvin Tan Jye Yee’s latest insensitive video which features him reciting the Azan, a Muslim call for prayer, while playing a keyboard.
Its Youth chief Chong Sin Woon said it was obvious that Tan made the video to provoke the Muslims in the country.
“It’s an insane move and nobody should defend him. I want my Muslim friends to know that we share the same anger towards his stupidity. We condemn him as much as Muslims condemn him,” he said yesterday.
Chong added that Tan’s action did not represent the sentiments of the Chinese community in Malaysia.
He called upon all Malaysians, regardless of their background, to stand together to condemn Tan’s action.
“I challenge him to come back to Malaysia and face the law. Don’t run away and act like a hero,” he said.
Tan fled the country last year to seek political asylum in the United States and to avoid being arrested by the police for mocking Islam and the monarchy.
Tan’s passport was also revoked by the Immigration Department in December last year.
Tan, 27, posted the two minute-50 second video on his Facebook page on Tuesday, where he is seen reciting the Azan bare-chested.
The post has since garnered more than 7,000 shares, 1,500 likes and some 300,000 views.
Pendang Umno Youth chief Mohamad Fadzil Zolkipli, 37, said a police report has been lodged by Pendang Umno members on Tuesday night.
