A student earned the ire of netizens after he was seen in a viral video using the Philippine flag to mop the floor.

The video uploaded by Filipino Netizens Facebook page showed a male student mopping the floor using a Philippine flag tied to a stick.

As of posting time, the video has accumulated over one million views and has been shared over 28,000 times.

In the 22-second video, some people were heard laughing while someone was heard saying an expletive.

Any act of disrespect to the flag is prohibited under Republic Act No. 8491 or “Act Prescribing the Code of the National Flag, Anthem, Motto, Coat-of-Arms and Other Heraldic Items and Devices of the Philippines.”

“Reverence and respect shall at all times be accorded the flag, the anthem and other national symbols which embody the national ideals and traditions and which express the principles of sovereignty and national solidarity,” Section 2 of the said law stated.

A fine of P5,000 to P20,000, or one year imprisonment, or both will be imposed to any violator of the law.
