“Look beyond the appealing promises of your candidates.”

Vice presidential candidate Leni Robredo gave this advice to college students in Las Piñas City on Tuesday as she encouraged them to get involved in the upcoming elections.

As most election candidates promise to fight corruption, Robredo urged the students of the University of Perpetual Help Las Piñas to examine first the track record of the candidates they are rooting for before voting for them.

“Participating is educating yourselves… Sana ‘yung pagtingin niyo, hindi lang pang-ibabaw, pero tignan niyo ‘yung lahat ng anino na nasa likod namin para makapamili kayo ng husto,” Robredo said, responding to the question from a student who asked how she would encourage the youth to participate in the elections.

Robredo, Liberal Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas and their senatorial bets took their campaign to southern Metro Manila cities of Las Piñas, Parañaque and Muntinlupa on Tuesday.

Robredo warned the students that election candidates will naturally say what the people want to hear. But the voters, she said, should carefully weigh in who among the aspiring leaders are deserving of their votes.

Wala namang magsasabing in favor sila sa corruption. Lahat kami, sasabihin namin, kontra kami sa corruption,” she said.

The Camarines Sur Representative also advised the students not to be easily influenced by the rumors they read and hear as some camps of rival candidates hire people to spread wrong information against them on the internet.

“I don’t know if you are aware na ngayong election, may mga kandidatong nagha-hire ng entire companies para lang mag-feed ng wrong information sa Internet. Huwag sana tayong mahuhulog sa ganyang trap,” she said.

An intelligent voter, according to Robredo, does not just accept any information they come across on the web—they examine it.

“Dapat turuan natin ‘yung sarili nating matutunang mag-assess ng tama at alin ang mali,” she added. TVJ
