YOKOHAMA, Japan—When you have an army of Pikachu coming at you, what do you do?
Aim your phone at them to preserve such an Instagrammable moment? Roll up your sleeves and get ready to pinch each and every Pikachu on the cheeks? Bring out the Pokeballs to catch ’em all?
The Pokemon Company (TPC), in partnership with the city of Yokohama, has been turning into Pikachu wonderland for three years now. Since starting in 2014, the Pikachu Outbreak has become a summer tradition. People flock to Yokohama to see and gush over Pikachu—lots of it.
There’s Pikachu who’s dressed like a ship captain and there are several who are dressed as sailors. There’s hula Pikachu and even boy band Pikachu.
“The event was created with the idea that everyone can just enjoy Pokemon outside, just like in Pokemon Go,” says TPC corporate officer Susumu Fukunaga.
The Pokemon Company is celebrating their 20th anniversary this year.
