Oftentimes people pick up USB chargers that are of lower quality because they’re cheap and “will work just like the other one.” Unfortunately many acquire the faulty ones that either fizzle out or just don’t charge their devices properly. These inferior chargers’ days may be numbered as USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) is moving to certify USB chargers to guarantee their workability.

Engadget reports that USB chargers will be certified based on specifications. According to Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF president and COO, the devices will carry the promise that “it just works.”

The certification will also help to address the various irregularities with USB Type-C cables. Because Type-C cables are more powerful than  USB 2.0/3.0, there is greater danger in acquiring the wrong cable for devices. Cables can either introduce too much electricity or not enough of it, which could eventually damage electronic devices. Companies will be encouraged to submit their chargers for testing to earn the USB-IF certification.

Cheap knock-offs may not be completely eliminated but consumers can at least fall back on looking for USB-IF-certified devices when purchasing chargers to ensure the safety of their electronic gadgets.  Alfred Bayle
