‘Project Scorpio’ may end traditional console generations

Microsoft says the Xbox One may be the last and first of its kind to share a gaming library that will be fully compatible with future console iterations.

Microsoft has talked about the future of gaming consoles during an interview with Engadget.

With “Project Scorpio,” essentially a beefed-up, 4K-ready Xbox One, Microsoft sees its console’s future to be similar to the PC where regular upgrades are possible instead of waiting for several years before releasing a new console generation.

Aaron Greenberg, head of Xbox games marketing for Microsoft, also clarified what Xbox head Phil Spencer had said about all games and accessories being compatible with all versions of Xbox One. Greenberg stated that one of the  biggest concerns when the next-generation consoles arrive is compatibility of older titles with the new machine. Moving forward, gamers will no longer have to worry about that with future Xbox machines.

When it comes to VR, Greenberg said that Microsoft does not consider high-fidelity VR as part of console gaming. It is high-fidelity VR on its own with different VR experiences on offer.

Microsoft aims to build a library and a community through Project Scorpio. There will be no “Project Scorpio exclusive title” per se but, as is with the PC, there is the inevitability of newer titles requiring certain specifications and technologies that the older devices will not be equipped with.

The company certainly recognizes that it is placing a big bet on Project Scorpio, so everyone will just have to wait and see what happens next.  Alfred Bayle
