WATCH: Seal hides inside tourist boat to escape killer whales

A seal jumped onto a boat in Vancouver, Canada, after a team of famished killer orca whales marched to chase him.

Nick Templeman, who runs Campbell River Whale and Bear excursions , was guiding a group of tourists on a whale-watching trip when an unexpected passenger boarded their boat. Templeman and his group were watching the orca whales for 30 minutes when the whales’ serene mood shifted upon sighting the lone seal.

In an interview with CBC News, Templeman described how the seal managed to evade its attackers. “This seal was tossed around a few times and taken under quite a bit before seeking refuge among the boats in the area. He got close enough to see us and beelined for the boat,” he narrated.

However, the clever seal lurched off the boat after a few seconds. Realizing it was a wrong move, the sea mammal returned when three orca whales attempted to devour it. As seen in the series of clips, the seal even used the boat’s engine as its armor against its predators.

The killer whales stormed away with a failed mission to catch the alert seal.  The hair-raising and chilling encounter was filmed and uploaded by Kirk Frase on video-streaming site YouTube on Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands views.

“It was an amazing and intense encounter—the seal is the survivor,” Templeman told the news site.  Gianna Francesca Catolico
