Japan recorded its first Pokémon Go-related accident after a driver playing the game ran over a woman on Tuesday.

Keiji Goou, 39, a farmer-truck driver, was arrested by police after he hit two female pedestrians at a road in Tokushima City. Sachiko Nakanishi, 72, a hairdresser from Kitayama City, died on the spot while 60-year-old Kayoko Igawa was severely injured, ANN reported.

According to NHK, Goou explained to the police that he was not looking because he was absorbed on the viral game.

“I was playing Pokémon Go while driving, so I didn’t really see what was in front of me,” Goh told the authorities.

This month, an update displayed on the app reminds players not to play while driving or riding the subway.

According to local news reports, several Pokémon Go-related incidents were recorded in the country since its launch on July 22. Around 1,000 Japanese players were apprehended due to traffic violations.  Gianna Francesca Catolico
