Social media bad-mouth bakery over transgender Ken doll cake

A cake decorated by a humble bakery in Sacramento, California, USA, has stirred social media uproar.

To please one of its customers, Freeport Bakery intricately baked a cake shaped as a transgender Ken doll. The Mattel character-inspired buttermilk cake was prepped in a fabulous pink dress with a string of white flowers and a glimmering tiara. The finished product was posted on the bakery’s Facebook page on Sunday, Aug. 14.

While the customer was satisfied and joyous with the delectable creation, a hefty number of social media users felt dissatisfied with the pastry.

Marlene Goetzeler, the owner of the bakery, was surprised with the social media frenzy and online discrimination brought by the concoction’s theme and design.

“Call me naive,” Goetzeler told New York Daily News. “I was shocked…that somebody [referring to social media users] would be offended.”

Goetzeler nibbled the hate away by deleting all the sexist and pessimistic comments on their Facebook page. “They weren’t things that would serve any good, they were just negative,” she explained.

Freeport bakery posted the cake’s portrait once again with the caption, “Facebook Friends, After posting this we had a ton of people unliking our Facebook page. I deleted the rude remarks, thank goodness not too many. Our customer was thrilled. Share this for us.” It was chaperoned with another Facebook post on Monday, where the bakery thanked its supporters for supporting its creation.

Several Facebook users were fascinated with the cake’s “marvelous” design. One user lauded the bakery, “This cake is utterly fantastic, and who wouldn’t want to have a dress like that in real life?”

For Goetzeler, the bakery’s sweet success lies in its commitment to serve its loyal customers. “We’re in the business of spreading joy–that’s what we do. We’ll make cakes that people love,” she pledged in an interview with Huffington Post.  Gianna Francesca Catolico
