When a game gets big enough or gets enough attention, fan-made content is bound to pop up somewhere in the web. No Mario’s Sky was one such project, which mashed together No Man’s Sky with the iconic Super Mario Brothers.
Unfortunately Nintendo is notorious for cracking down on fan-made projects and quickly moved to have No Mario’s Sky shut down and taken off the internet just as it did with another fan project that remade the classic Metroid II: Return of Samus, reports Geek.
The small team behind No Mario’s Sky, however, decided to re-release their game under the name DMCA’s Sky as a snub to Nintendo’s lawyers. The main character was also changed into ‘Spaceman Finn.’
Here is the game’s new description:
“Help Spaceman Finn search for Princess Mango in an infinite universe (that may contain no Mangoes). Made in 72 hours for Ludum Dare 36. Featuring crazy Moombas, An Infinite Universe, Muscle, Amazing Physics and a Radical Space Ship; DMCA’s Sky is the hackneyed remake-gone-mashup you’ve been craving.”
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. For Nintendo, however, it’s the fastest way to get a DMCA notice. Alfred Bayle
