Since the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox fans have been eagerly awaiting more details about Project Scorpio. Unfortunately, they’ll have to wait a little bit longer, but at least Microsoft has promised to shed more light on their upcoming console at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) on June 11 at Los Angeles, California.

Project Scorpio was first formally unveiled during the same event last year and is expected to launch late in 2017.

Much like the PlayStation 4 upgrade, 2016’s PlayStation 4 Pro, Project Scorpio is expected to build upon the Xbox One while offering the power to push 4K gaming and virtual reality experiences.

Both mid-lifespan refreshes reflect adaptation to pressures from both the PC gaming sector and a cycle of yearly iterations from mobile phone manufacturers.

Project Scorpio is likely to compete with 4K and VR-capable PCs and surpass the PlayStation 4 Pro, though an introductory price is still unknown.

The PlayStation 4 Pro launched at $399 (almost P20,000) in November 2016, by which point the original model PS4 had been replaced by a slimmer version and its price lowered to $299 (almost P15,000).

Xbox had released its own reduced size replacement, the August 2016 Xbox One S, at an identical price point.

Finally, the June 11 date means that the Xbox briefing, traditionally an event taking place on the Monday before E3 opens its doors later in the week, now takes place on Sunday instead.

Fans hope that the E3 briefing will also likely include the price tag and a more detailed look into the hardware under the hood. June just can’t come any sooner. Alfred Bayle/JB
