Ever since the internet has become a vital component in people’s lives, it seems that Microsoft Windows has always reigned supreme as the operating system (OS) of choice.
But a new technological era is upon us, as Google’s Android has reportedly dethroned its predecessor, The Business Insider reported.
Data released by research firm StatCounter showed that Android has surpassed Windows in terms of meteoric mobile growth and has become the primal OS among online users over the past decade.
Based on statistics gathered last month, Google notched a 39.93-percent market share, compared with Window’s 37.9.
“This is a milestone in technology history and the end of an era,” StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen described the development in a statement.
“It marks the end of Microsoft’s leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980s. It also represents a major breakthrough for Android which held just 2.4% of global internet usage share only five years ago,” he said.
Despite Google’s recent success, the company still faces stiff competition, as its rival IOS by Apple has also been steadily rising up the ranks since the past recent years. Khristian Ibarrola /ra
