WATCH: Elbow cassette player mixes nostalgia with modern gadgetry

Dig into your stash of old cassette tapes because this piece of gadget is aiming to make them relevant again.

Unlike CDs, cassette tapes are a little bit more robust. Which is why the “Elbow” is designed the way it is. It’s basically like a “Sony Walkman” without the cumbersome plastic box to house all the electronics.

The magnetic strip from the cassette goes through a reader while a rotor winds up the magnetic tape to one side. To listen to side B, simply shift the biaxial arm to the other side.

It’s still in its concept phase but the organization BrainMonk is looking at actually building the device. A market survey is available over at the main website for the “Elbow.”

But when you can fit thousands of songs in a smartphone, why would you even want to revive cassette tapes? If anything, the “Elbow” could end up more as a retro fashion statement than a viable alternative like vinyl. Alfred Bayle/JB
