A new Pokémon game for smartphones is currently in development and will take a slightly different approach to the pocket monster hunting game.
Titled “Pokéland”, players will be put in control of “toy” Pokémon and battle it out with other Pokémon on various in-game islands similar to Pokémon Rumble, reports Kotaku.
The game is being developed for both Android and iOS. It will require an internet connection to play, as well as a new or existing Nintendo account.
The app is currently undergoing Android-only alpha testing in Japan. This version of the game features six islands, 52 different stages and 134 types of Pokémon. For the duration of this alpha test, players can only reach level 15 of the Champion Tower. Alpha testers will also be unable to transfer their data once the app officially launches.
It is still unknown whether the app will have an international release but alpha testing in Japan will run until June 9. Alfred Bayle/JB
