After Nintendo has reignited a sense of nostalgia for retro gamers by bringing back several popular titles, it looks like its long time nemesis Sega is bracing to do the same.
The Tokyo-based video game developer announced the release of SEGA Forever—an app that will offer classic games from Master System, Genesis/Mega Drive and Dreamcast, among others.
The free-to-play app will launch on both iOS and Android this week, and will feature games like “Altered Beast,” “Comix Zone,” “Kid Chameleon,” “Phantasy Star II” and “Sonic The Hedgehog,” Inquisitr reported.
Although not all titles will be made available at once, SEGA promised to release a new game every two weeks.
“We’ve never before done something that really crosses all of the different gaming eras, and isn’t prejudice against someone because they grew up in the ’80s versus the ’90s,” SEGA’s chief marketing officer, Mike Evans, said in a Metro UK report. “And so what we’re trying to do is look at how we can take content that spans two decades and make it all available in the same place.”
Also, each game will also be faithful to the original by keeping the default difficulty of levels and aids. However, smartphone and tablet users might experience a difference in gameplay, since SEGA games were designed for gaming controllers and not for touch screens.
The app will be completely free of charge at the moment, but might require subscription fees in the future.
