Side scrolling games where players navigate the game world by going left or right is quite basic as far as games go. So Unfold Games added another dimension to the formula, creating a Rubik’s-cube-like puzzle game called “DARQ”.
The story puts players in the shoes of a boy named Lloyd who realizes he is dreaming. His dream quickly descends into a nightmare, forcing him to find a way to wake up by solving various puzzles in the dream world.
Because it’s a dream, anything goes. Lloyd can twist corridors, create new rooms, and even defy the very laws of physics. Players do this by moving rooms up, down, left, right, forward and back, to name a few, to help Lloyd escape his predicament.
Based on the game description, DARQ plays on the anticipation of a “jump scare” to keep players on edge. Furthermore, the makers stated that they wish for players to develop an emotional connection to the experience through the artistic direction of the game.
Looking at the videos posted on Twitter, the game appears to have a noir-esque feel with its use of black and white.
According to a report by gaming news outlet DualShockers, “DARQ” will come out early 2018 on the digital game distribution platform for PC, Steam. JB
