The Backup and Sync era has officially began, as Google announced it will stop supporting the Drive app on desktops starting Dec. 11 and shut it down completely by March 12, 2018.
The replacement app, which offers the same service as Google Drive but has larger storage capabilities, was first announced last July.

The new feature will automatically synchronize all files stored on users’ desktop and documents folders and make all image files part of Google Photos.
In a series of blog posts, Google confirmed the transition plan and advised Drive users to slowly move their files and install the new feature before the deadline.
Those who have yet to transfer their files by October will receive notification alerts and will be redirected to two replacement options depending on whether they are a consumer or business user.
Meanwhile, the Google Drive service option can still be accessed from the web and smartphone apps.
