Globe Telecom data-related revenues now account for 53% of topline

Globe Telecom’s data-related revenues accounted for over 53% of the company’s topline in January to September amid the growing customer demand for data brought about by the popularity of streaming and on demand video content.

The company’s data-related revenues in the first nine months of the year totaled roughly P51 billion against total service revenues of P95.1 billion, a 6% increase from a year earlier, backed by the robust growth in its mobile data business.

Mobile data revenues in the 9-month period reached P31.3 billion, a 20% jump from P26.1 billion a year earlier, driven by higher data usage and the continued growth in smartphone penetration. Mobile data traffic during the period surged 73% to 430 petabytes from 249 PB a year earlier. Mobile data revenues contributed 43% of total mobile revenues of P73.1 billion, a 7% increase from a year earlier.

On the other hand, home broadband revenues in the first nine months of the year reached 11.7% billion, an 8% hike from P10.9 billion a year earlier, driven by strong demand for fast and reliable internet access, with the home broadband customer base reaching 1.26 million at the end of the third quarter.

Corporate data revenue, meanwhile, reached P7.6 billion, a 4% rise from P7.3 billion a year earlier amid increasing demand for data connectivity, managed service solutions and cloud-based services that resulted in acceleration of its customer base and circuit count.

“With the company’s continued efforts to enhance our network’s data capacities, with the aim of providing a differentiated customer experience, we expect out data segments to drive revenue growth momentum moving forward,” said Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu.

He noted that the company’s capital expenditure in the first nine months of the year reached P36.8 billion, about 84% of which were spent for enhancing its data capacities and addressing the data service needs of its customers. Capex allocation for data-related requirements have been steadily increasing over the past several years, at 49% in 2014, 48% in 2015, 65% in 2016, increasing further to 84% year to date.
