‘Hugot’ nation: Filipino netizens pour out hopeless romantic lines to mark super blue blood moon event

The ‘super blue blood moon’ is seen behind Mayon volcano as it spews ash near Legazpi City, Albay province, early on February 1, 2018. Skywatchers were hoping for a rare lunar eclipse that combines three unusual events — a blue moon, a super moon and a total eclipse, which was to make for a large crimson moonviewable in many corners of the globe. / AFP PHOTO / TED ALJIBE

Nobody seemed to have warned us that the appearance of the super blue blood moon would also bring war flashbacks of failed loves and embittered ‘hugot’ lines.

But that is exactly what happened when the phenomenon came in full visibility last night, Jan. 31, prompting Filipino netizens to take to social media in a storm and exchange ‘hugots’. The sadder, the better. It hurts, you know!

“We used to look at the skies together even when we were apart,” wrote ABS-CBN actress Ria Atayde. “Tonight’s moon would have been perfect. But all it did was remind me of how you broke my heart.”

Atayde’s post last night gathered lots of response, with some followers adding more hugot to her tweet. One netizen named Gia (@grglvr) said, “But all it did was remind me of how you loved her. Wishing it was me.”

“And it was more bloody than the moon above,” followed one Sienna Alessia (@siennaalessia).

Ves Garcia (@lovesaheart) also had her share of hugot, writing, “The moon showed up to me, as if it was looking at me from afar and I can’t even reach it. Just like you. Right there. But no. ‘Cause you’re not looking at me anymore, even from afar. You’re gone. Yes you are.”

Meanwhile, Ivan Asaula (@iVanzz_), tried his hand at flash prose. “Tanging hiling sa buwan na nakatingin, na ika’y mapasakin.”

One user Joaquin (@JoaquinRedReyes), however, tweeted a breezy pickup line instead. “And ganda ng moon. Pero alam mo mas maganda? Ang moonting sandaling makasama ka.

Of course, netizens from Facebook were not to be overshadowed as they, too, shared their own hugots. One Facebook page, Open Conversations, called on people to post their best hugot lines, eventually attracting comments from hoards of netizens.

Buti pa blue moon binibigyan mo ng time ako hindi,” Rafael Jay wrote.

Katrina Hallare, on the other hand, likened a certain lover to the moon. “Parehas kayo ng buwan: nagbibigay liwanag sa madilim kong mundo.

One seemed to have been going through a tough time as her hugot line cut deep the most. “Buti pa ung blue blood moon kahit alam mung saglit lang magpakita kahit alum mung iiwan kadin at mawawala…hinintay mu padin,” wrote one Jessa Casaljay. “Samantalang ako araw araw nandto.. Dka iniiwan pero ni minsan d mu manlng tinitigan.

There were those who equated the rarity of the super blue blood moon to how hard it takes for them to fall in love.

And there was word play after word play, with netizens playing with idioms to suit their degree of bitterness/betterness.

Perhaps Filipinos just really have a creative knack when it comes to making jokes about heartbreak to make pain, well, a little less painful. But regardless of this unabashed way of coping, it cannot be denied that there will always be that one person who will speak The Truth, no holds barred, to wake us all up.

Papa Hugot wrote, “Kahit anong maging kulay pa yang MOON, SINGLE ka parin kinabukasan at wala kang ka-date sa Valentine’s Day!”

Well, there’s still 13 days before Valentine’s Day anyway, so the tears can wait. Soldier on, martyrs of love! JB
