Consumer tech website TechCrunch reports that Amazon has discreetly launched a mobile web browser called Internet. This mobile application, aimed at emerging markets, is currently only available for Android and in India.
Compatible with all versions of Android from 5.0 onwards, Internet is billed as a “lite” application, which is a small download (just under 2MB) and isn’t resource-intensive to run. It is mainly aimed at users in emerging markets. In this respect, Amazon is following a route already trodden by Google and Facebook. However, it is still surprising to see the global online retail giant out a mobile web browser.
The Internet app displays a news feed on its homepage, notably featuring the latest news, entertainment info and cricket, which is India’s favorite sport. The app also offers private browsing to prevent the collection of browsing data.
For the time being, Amazon appears to be keeping quiet about the launch and its ambitions in the sector. JB
